Our journey begins in Chicago with a simple question: what do people really know about blood donation?
Before Rosie the Rescuer officially hits Route 66, we'll gather with community members, public health leaders, blood donation advocates, young donors, and individuals living with sickle cell disease for an honest conversation about the realities of the blood supply. Through open dialogue, we'll explore misconceptions, share personal experiences, and examine why blood donation remains one of the most powerful acts of kindness a person can make. The MOK team will host a yoga class and breakfast for our partners before heading on the road.
The following day, we'll take those conversations to the streets of Chicago. Along Navy Pier and throughout the city, Lori and Marie will meet everyday people, hear their stories, and spark spontaneous discussions about blood donation, community service, and what motivates people to help others.
Versiti Blood Center Illinois is also hosting a Miles of Kindness blood drive on July 8 in Romeoville, IL.
These unscripted interactions set the tone for the entire Miles of Kindness journey: listening first, learning from others, and discovering the unexpected connections that bring communities together.

St. Louis highlights the powerful role that culture, sports, and community pride can play in creating awareness around important issues like blood donation.
As we travel through one of America's great sports cities, we'll explore how public figures, local organizations, and passionate fans can help amplify messages that often struggle to break through the noise. By connecting the excitement of sports and shared community experiences with the ongoing need for blood donors, we'll examine how awareness can grow in places where people naturally gather and connect.
This stop is a reminder that solving challenges like the blood shortage requires more than medical institutions alone…it takes communities, conversations, and creative ways of reaching people where they are.

Springfield is all about classic Route 66 Americana, unexpected conversations, and a little bit of fun. It’s the birthplace of Route 66!
As Rosie the Rescuer rolls through town, we'll stop at some of Springfield's iconic Route 66 landmarks and meet travelers from across the country. At Love's Travel Stop, we’ll strike up spontaneous conversations about blood donation, kindness, and what people think when they see a retired ambulance driving across America. Marie also has some surprises for Lori up her sleeve here.
This stop is a reminder that sometimes the best way to start a conversation is simply to pull over and say hello.
-
In Oklahoma, starting in Tulsa, we'll tell the story of a young firefighter whose final wish was to spend his last days at home with his family. Because of policies surrounding transfusions and hospice care, that wish became far more complicated than anyone expected.
Through conversations with family members and those closest to his story, we'll explore the difficult decisions patients and families face when navigating serious illness. Filming along historic Route 66, we'll examine the intersection of healthcare policy, quality of life, and the human impact of decisions often made far from the people they affect.
-
Oklahoma City focuses on advocacy, action, and the future of blood donation.
Beginning alongside a community blood drive, we'll highlight the people who show up every day to help maintain a safe and reliable blood supply. We'll then explore how policymakers, healthcare leaders, and advocates can work together to strengthen awareness of the ongoing challenges facing blood collection and transfusion medicine.
This stop examines what happens when individual acts of kindness meet larger systems of change, and how both are necessary to protect patients who depend on blood every day.
-
In Amarillo, we'll share the remarkable story of a young woman whose life was saved after a devastating car accident.
Her survival required an extraordinary amount of donated blood and the coordinated efforts of countless individuals, from first responders and flight crews to trauma teams and blood donors she will likely never meet. Through her story, we'll show how a single emergency can depend on the generosity of dozens of strangers.
We'll also bring the message of blood donation to one of Route 66's most iconic landmarks, Cadillac Ranch, creating a memorable reminder that every blood donation has the power to become part of someone's survival story.
-
Not every stop on the Miles of Kindness journey is centered around a single story. Albuquerque serves as an opportunity to focus on the simple acts of generosity that connect communities.
Whether through conversations with local residents, first responders, or community organizations, this stop celebrates kindness in its many forms. Along the route, we'll distribute encouragement, share stories, and explore how small acts of compassion can create lasting impacts.
The City of Albuquerque has been celebrating the Centennial Anniversary of Route 66, and we’ll going to get in on the fun too. Sometimes the most meaningful moments are the ones we don't plan.
-
As we continue westward through the breathtaking landscapes of Arizona, Winslow represents the connection between geography, logistics, and lifesaving technology.
At a local blood drive hosted by Vitalant, we'll capture the behind-the-scenes processes that help turn donated blood into lifesaving products for patients in need. By highlighting the technology and expertise involved in modern blood collection, we'll help viewers better understand the journey every blood donation takes before reaching a hospital bedside.
This stop reminds us that every donation begins with a donor but relies on an entire network of dedicated professionals to save lives.
-
This stop focuses on some of the smallest and most vulnerable patients: children, in partnership with LifeStream.
Working alongside pediatric healthcare professionals, we'll explore how blood transfusions support infants and children facing serious medical challenges. We'll hear from physicians and caregivers who witness every day how donated blood gives young patients a chance to grow, heal, and thrive.
-
The journey ends where Route 66 meets the Pacific Ocean.
At Houchin Community Blood Bank, we'll bring together individuals whose experiences with blood donation have not always been straightforward.
Through honest conversations and a community roundtable, we'll discuss how eligibility policies have evolved, how barriers can be reduced, and why creating a welcoming environment for all potential donors matters. While acknowledging past frustrations, this discussion focuses on progress, inclusion, and the shared goal of ensuring that everyone who wants to help has the opportunity to do so.
On the Santa Monica Pier and along the beach, we'll gather survivors, donors, supporters, and new friends we've met along the way to celebrate the power of kindness in action. Together, we'll reflect on the miles traveled, countless stories shared, and the extraordinary impact that blood donors make every single day.
While the road may end here, the mission continues. The goal has always been bigger than the journey itself: inspiring more people to donate blood, help others, and prove that even the smallest act of kindness can travel farther than we ever imagine.
